Au Moyen \u00c2ge, le Patou fut utilis\u00e9 pour garder les ch\u00e2teaux et prot\u00e9ger les troupeaux contre les pr\u00e9dateurs (ours, loups, lynx et m\u00eame l’homme). Il est mentionn\u00e9 au XIVe si\u00e8cle par Gaston Phoebus. Tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 au XVIIe si\u00e8cle, il partagea la gloire de la cour de Louis XIV.
La premi\u00e8re description du Patou appara\u00eet dans le livre du comte de Bylandt en 1897. Le standard officiel aupr\u00e8s de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 centrale canine est enregistr\u00e9 en 1923, \u00e0 l’initiative de M. S\u00e9nac-Lagrange, membre de la R\u00e9union des amateurs de chiens pyr\u00e9n\u00e9ens. Le standard actuel a tr\u00e8s peu \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9 depuis, seuls des d\u00e9tails y ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ajout\u00e9s.
Le Patou s’\u00e9tait fait plus rare dans les campagnes en raison de la disparition des grands pr\u00e9dateurs mais suite au retour du loup dans les Alpes fran\u00e7aises, il conna\u00eet un regain d’int\u00e9r\u00eat aupr\u00e8s des bergers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Au sein d’un troupeau, c’est un gardien remarquable. Son r\u00f4le n’est pas de rassembler les moutons mais de les prot\u00e9ger. Pour se faire, on l’habitue tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t \u00e0 vivre avec eux (minimum de contact avec l’homme), de sorte qu’il se consid\u00e8re ensuite comme faisant partie du troupeau (il pense \u00eatre un mouton). Si le chien d\u00e9tecte un intrus, il aboie et s’interpose entre le troupeau et ce qu’il consid\u00e8re comme une menace. Il faut pourtant faire tr\u00e8s attention en montagne, car \u00e9tant tr\u00e8s protecteur pour le troupeau, il n’h\u00e9sitera pas \u00e0 mordre les promeneurs qui franchiront la \u00ab\u00a0ligne rouge\u00a0\u00bb.
Au sein d’une famille, c’est un animal qui est naturellement un bon gardien, du fait de son caract\u00e8re protecteur. Il poss\u00e8de un grand sens de la famille et sait tr\u00e8s bien reconna\u00eetre des amis qu’il n’a pas vu depuis longtemps. Tr\u00e8s doux avec les enfants et plut\u00f4t placide, il est cependant peu adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la vie citadine. C’est en effet un chien qui a besoin d’espace et dont l’aboiement puissant peut se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler une source de g\u00eane pour les voisins.
